Kyle Swan is an extraordinarily passionate and talented jazz drummer from Chicago, Illinois. He has demonstrated true dedication to enhancing his artistry in every way possible. He has had the prestigious honor of being apart of the Ravinia Jazz Scholars Program, Stean’s Music Institute, as well as the Thelonious Monk Jazz Institute High School Programs while in high school. He then attended Eastern Illinois University for one year before transferring to University of Miami’s Frost School of Music in 2013. He attained his Bachelor’s degree in Studio Music and Jazz as well as Criminology in 2016. While at the University of Miami he has participated in many events such as the Monterey Jazz Festival with the Extensions Jazz Vocal Ensemble (2015)as well as the Jalisco Jazz Festival (2016) with the Frost Sextet. He has also participated in the Montreal Jazz Festival in 2016. Currently Kyle is the Jazz Drum Set Teaching Assistant at the Frost School of Music. You can find him playing at many local venues with great local artists as well as players from out of town such as Orrin Evans, Brian Lynch, Bobby Broom, etc. In the near future he will be playing at the Jazz Education Network in New Orleans as well as the Jazz Cruise.
Kyle is one of the most talented young drummers I have come across, and his talent is evident in many facets of his playing. Possessing a great technical command of the drums, his facility is only superseded by his musicianship and maturity as a player. Kyle excels at all styles and genres of jazz — straight ahead, modern, latin jazz, etc. — and sounds great in any band I’ve ever heard him in. He has an excellent sense of time and groove, and plays with great confidence, energy, and musicality.
